What is HPV?
Human papillomavirus, HPV is a common virus that can cause cancers later in life.
It's quite difficult for people with HPV to realize that they have it, as they don't usually show any symptoms. That's why getting checked is important. Cervical cancer screening, also known as a 'pap smear' or 'smear test,' checks if everything is okay in a woman’s cervix.
Doctors recommend that women have their first check by age 30 and then repeat it every 5 to 10 years to ensure good health. Since girls with HIV are at a higher risk of getting HPV, they should start getting checked at 25 and go every 3 to 5 years.
How is HPV transmitted?
HPV is spread through intimate skin-to-skin contact. You can get HPV by having sex with someone who has the virus, even if they don't have signs or symptoms.
The vaccine remains the safest way to protect you from HPV and reduce your risk of certain cancers later in life.
